When I met 26 year old Flicka at the Rainbow Bridge, I knew we’d have a fun time as we drove to her Welcome Banquet. Because she’s a horse it was pretty tricky reaching up to her head, to do up her Gold Helmet. Fortunately I had her dear friend with me, doggie Francy.
Flicka’s full name is My Friend Flicka, just like the movie, so we decided to give her a movie star Welcome Banquet.
Her mom is a dear friend to many pals on twitter: pawty DJ extrordinare: @Flicka47, also known as “the little dog Ruthie.” Ruthie’s mom has written a beautiful tribute to Flicka, remembering the day she bought her, as the little foal #4544.
Flicka, 15 hands (horse talk to other horse pals, for describing her height), was a girl who knew what she wanted and wasn’t one to be pushed around.
She spent her first 12 years living at the stables in Oak View California where her favourite thing to do was race around with her mane and tail flying thru the air.
Each afternoon the stable’s dog, Francy the Rottweiler and Flicka would have a race around the stables. They did this every day for 4 years until Francy arrived over the Rainbow bridge, aged 1o years old (which is a lots of years for a Rottie.)
With Francy’s menu suggestions, @PuzTheCat and @R0O put on a marvellous equine banquet featuring creative uses of lucerne, carrots and apples. Not only did it smell good, but the fresh lucerne was so soft to roll on!
I was excited to introduce Flicka to our Rainbow Bridge pastures. She couldn’t believe her eyes. So many lush pastures and allowed to eat as much as she likes? She kicked up her hooves and zoomed around, with Francy close by, just like the old days.
When Flicka’s mom and Ruthie arrive at the Rainbow Bridge, Flicka will be there to meet them. And probably doggie Francy too. You will all be a forever family again…but not yet.
So when your hear thunder in the distance, it’s probably Flicka and Francy racing thru the skies, just like they used to, everyday. :=o)
