Pawcurious is a blog written by veterinarian and social media personality and Dr. Jessica Vogelsang, also known as Dr.V.
Three years ago Dr.V rescued Kekoa after Kekoa’s owner died, rendering her homeless. During her three years Kekoa touched Dr.V.’s heart and taught her many life lessons, from a black dog’s perspective.
On Friday Kekoa had to be euthanised, leaving Dr.V. and her family broken hearted. Before Kekoa travelled across the Rainbow Bridge, Dr.V. and her family had one last surprise lined up.
Dr.V. was kind enough to allow me to copy her post in Pawcurious.com about Kekoa, which begins now:
‘Please God, Let Me Go With My Face In A Plate Of Chocolate Chip Ice Cream.’
Friday things were bad, Kekoa’s leg was aching. So you know it’s time to go, but not without some bacon.
Saturday was super great, all day long we ate and ate, venison, rabbit, gator too, all day feasting through and through.
And when Sunday came around, grey and rainy, under cloud, I sat down and then I cried, cause it was time to say goodbye.
When the doctor gave the shot, my dear dog she felt it not, because she had – don’t get me wrong – in her paws, a treat filled Kong.
As she slipped away to dream, she was slurping down ice cream, chocolate chip with bacon too. When I go I want that too.
I am sad and I will cry. No-one wants their dog to die. But this gift I had to give – BEFORE SHE DIED, SHE REALLY LIVED!
Sweet Koa, in our family for three wonderful years, in our hearts forever.
Pepi Speaking Again: what a beautiful story! Now I know why I smelt bacon on Kekoa’s breath when I met her at the Rainbow Bridge. No wonder she had chocolate around her mouth and smiling such a big smile.
As we drove to her Welcome Banquet in my Pram/Stroller, she told me wonderful stories of her life over the last three years and what a lucky girl she is to have a second chance family like you.
To Dr.V. and family: please know Kekoa has settled in wonderfully, surrounded by family and many great pals. She had a wonderful Welcome Banquet, nomming her favourite foods and dancing the night away with all her new RB buddies. *strikes a pose* She especially loved the pizza frisbees!
Please know we will take good care of her until one day you unexpectedly find yourself standing on the Rainbow Bridge and Kekoa will be there to welcome you. You will be a forever family again…not just yet.
For anyone who knows Dr.V. or her family, when you see them on twitter, facebook or anywhere else, please send them a hug. They could probably really use one.
*leans out of Pram and looks down and waves* What a view!
