Hello, welcome to our Sunday Selfie gallery. I have included a series of photographs which mum (Michele), took of one of our own wild Koalas, who became ill and had to be transported to hospital.
The photo above and the one directly below are both very important photographs. They capture the terrible moment when a Koala with Retro Virus realizes he doesn’t have the strength to climb the tree. Although he is a wild Koala with no direct human contact, he was still one of our own Koalas, who we look after every day.
The photo above says it all. He has given up. He just can’t do it. He can’t climb the tree. He is also dramatically under weight and alarmingly skinny. Sadly, Retro Virus is caused by stress, mainly from loss of habitat, then dogs, then cars and humans.
This photograph shows the same Koala the first time he is ever being handled – which he hated. He yelled and screamed, but Michele had to do this to get him to hospital. He was lowered into a crate and taken by Animal Ambulance to Currumbin Wildlife Hospital, where Koala Specialist Vets were waiting for him to arrive.
At this point I am unsure how much information to include in my posts, as I don’t want every pal in tears. I can assure everyone though that when I leave pieces out of the story, each of the animals is seen by animal specialists in their particular field; especially the Australian native wildlife.
Australian wildlife can be very challenging to rescue because they have unique “flora systems” which can set of a chain of events within their body, unique to their species. They all react very badly to stress and this is one of our biggest issues when they become injured, ill or have to be handled.
About us: we are fortunate to live on a private golf course in Queensland, Australia, and mum (Michele), is the person in charge of looking after the prolific wildlife, bird and marine life on the course. She is also a First Responder Animal Rescuer for the RSPCA. We have some spectacular photographs of wildlife, so its nice to now have somewhere to share them. :=o)
